Early Childhood Education

UCF Early Childhood Education graduates will be able to do the following:

Discipline Specific Knowledge, Skills, Behavior and Values Outcomes

1. Demonstrate a breadth of subject matter knowledge that enables students to approach and to interrelate topics from a variety of perspectives, interests, and points of view, including collaboration with colleagues from other fields for the integration of instruction

Measure 1.1: Prior to the start of Internship I, all candidates will demonstrate proficiency in analysis of student ability by earning a rating of “S” or higher on all elements of the Florida Accomplished Practice, “knowledge of subject material,” by the supervising teacher and program. A scoring rubric will be used to assess each of the elements.

Measure 1.2: All teacher candidates will score at least 70% on each of the subject area tests given as examinations in specific courses. These include social studies, mathematics, reading and language arts, and science.

2. Use the references, material, and technologies of the discipline in a manner appropriate to the developmental stage of the learner

Measure 2.1: All candidates will demonstrate “Satisfactory” or higher proficiency in the use of references, materials and technologies through the project and Power Point presentation in EDU2980. A scoring rubric will be used to assess the critical elements of each of these aspects.

Measure 2.2: All candidates will score at least 70% on each of the hypothetical learner situations that require the development of a prescriptive Individualized Education Plan (IEP). These are part of EDU2880.

3. Continuously monitor changes in the early childhood education field

Measure 3.1: All candidates will demonstrate “Satisfactory” or higher proficiency on the exit exam questions that require discussion of changes in the early childhood field.

Measure 3.2: All candidates will score at least 70% on each of the 4 tests of current practice in early childhood education; each test is included in one of 4 specific courses in the curriculum.

Critical Thinking Outcomes

4. Analyze student performance standards to identify and evoke associated higher-order thinking skills as appropriate for students at this level

Measure 4.1: Prior to the start of Internship I, all candidates will demonstrate proficiency in analysis of student ability by earning a rating of “S” or higher on each of the following Florida Accomplished Practices: “continuous improvement,” “critical thinking,” human development and learning,” “knowledge of subject material,” by the supervising teacher and program. A scoring rubric will be used to assess each of the practices.

Measure 4.2: All candidates will demonstrate proficiency in analysis of student ability by earning a rating of “S” or higher on each of the following Florida Accomplished Practices: “continuous improvement,” “critical thinking,” human development and learning,” “knowledge of subject material,” by the supervising teacher and program. A scoring rubric will be used to assess each of the practices.

5. Assist students in selecting projects and assignments that involve the need to gather information and solve problems

Measure 5.1: Prior to the start of Internship I, all candidates will demonstrate proficiency in integration of problems, dilemmas and questions by earning a rating of “S” or higher on each of the following Florida Accomplished Practices: “critical thinking,” and “human development and learning,” by the supervising faculty member. A scoring rubric will be used to assess each of the targeted practices.

Measure 5.2: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will develop lesson plans that include guiding groups of students in the selection of research projects. An examination of the portfolios of a random sample will show that students earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by faculty.

6. Pose problems, dilemmas, and questions in lessons that involve knowledge of values and that require evaluative thinking

Measure 6.1: Prior to the start of Internship I, all candidates will demonstrate proficiency in posing problems, dilemmas, and questions that require evaluative thinking questions by earning a rating of “S” or higher by the supervising faculty member on the Florida Accomplished Practices: “critical thinking” ratings that address this skill. A scoring rubric will be used to assess each of the targeted practices.

Measure 6.2: During the junior field experience, all candidates will develop lesson plans that include posing problems, dilemmas and questions designed to promote evaluative thinking. All will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by faculty.

7. Assist students in applying the rules of evidence that govern the acceptability of judgments and conclusions

Measure 7.1: Candidates will score 80% or higher on the test of rules of evidence for judgments and conclusions in ED2780.

Measure 7.2: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will lead a lesson in applying the rules of evidence that govern the acceptability of judgments and conclusions. An examination of a random sample will show that candidates earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by faculty evaluators.

8. Guide students in evaluating the plausibility of claims or interpretations in the field of study

Measure 8.1: Candidates will score 80% or higher on the test of rules for evaluating claims or interpretations in ED2780.

Measure 8.2: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will lead a lesson in evaluating the plausibility of claims or interpretations in the field of study. Each candidate will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

9. Monitor students’ work and adjusts strategies in response to learners’ needs and successes in creative thinking activities

Measure 9.2: During the junior field experience, all candidates will demonstrate the ability to monitor students’ work and adjust teaching strategies. All will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by faculty.

Measure 9.2: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will monitor students’ work and adjust teaching strategies in response to learners’ needs and successes in creative thinking activities. Each candidate will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

10. Use technology and other appropriate tools to extend the learning environment for students

Measure 10.1: Candidates will score 80% or higher on the application of technological tools in the classroom environment.

Measure 10.2: In the lesson plans developed for the student teaching experience, candidates will demonstrate proficiency in the use of technological and other tools to extend the student learning environment. Each candidate will earn a rating of at least 4 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

Communication Outcomes

11. Communicate accurate subject matter in a language and style appropriate to the learner

Measure 11.1: In the simulation during ED2410, candidates will communicate accurate subject matter appropriate to the learner. Each candidate will demonstrate a proficiency of at least “satisfactory,” as rated by a faculty panel.

Measure 11.2: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will demonstrate the ability to convey accurate subject matter in a language and style appropriate to the learners in the assigned class. All candidates will earn a rating of 4 or higher on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

12. Establish positive interaction in the learning environment that uses incentives and consequences for students to promote excellence

Measure 12.1: In the simulation during ED2410, candidates will communicate accurate subject matter appropriate to the learner. Each candidate will demonstrate a proficiency of at least “satisfactory,” as assessed by a faculty panel.

Measure 12.2: As part of the portfolio for Internship II, all candidates will respond to a set of hypothetical classroom situations that require the appropriate use of incentives and consequences to promote excellence in student behavior. All candidates will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

13. Communicate effectively, in both verbal and nonverbal styles, with all students, including those with handicapping conditions and those of varying cultural and linguistic backgrounds

Measure 13.1: In the simulation during ED2410, candidates will communicate effectively in verbal and nonverbal styles with students of varied cultures, races and handicapping conditions. Each candidate will demonstrate a proficiency of at least “satisfactory,” as assessed by a faculty panel.

Measure 13.2: As part of the portfolio for Internship II, all candidates will respond to a set of hypothetical classroom situations that require both verbal and nonverbal responses to students. They will describe how they would respond to each situation. All candidates will earn a rating of at least 4 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

14. Communicate with and challenge all students in a positive and supportive manner that conveys high expectations

Measure 14.1: In the simulation during ED2410, candidates will communicate and challenge students in a manner that conveys high expectations and is positive and supportive. Each candidate will demonstrate a proficiency of at least “satisfactory,” as assessed by a faculty panel.

Measure 14.2: As part of the portfolio for Internship II, all candidates will respond to a set of hypothetical classroom situations that test teacher responses to student situations that challenges students in a positive and supportive manner. All candidates will earn a rating of 4 or 5 on a 5 point rubric in this area as rated by a faculty evaluator.

15. Encourage students' desire to receive and accept constructive feedback on individual work and behavior

Measure 15.1: In the test of responses to student work in ED3111, candidates will score at least 85% on the test questions that involve strategies for encouraging students” behavior in terms of accepting constructive feedback on their work.

Measure 15.2: As part of the portfolio for Internship II, candidates will achieve at least 80% proficiency on the research assignment involving classroom feedback.

Measure 15.3: During the student teaching experience, all candidates will be rated “satisfactory” or higher by a faculty observer on the ability to encourage students’ desire to accept constructive feedback.

English Language Arts Education

UCF English Language Arts Education graduates will be able to:

Discipline Specific Knowledge, Skills, Behavior and Values Outcomes

4. Demonstrate understanding of and proficiency in these specific English Language Arts skill areas:

  • constructing meaning from a variety of texts
  • emergent literacy
  • the developmental stages of reading
  • literature
  • the developmental stages of writing
  • the writing process
  • literacy assessment

Measure 4.1: All candidates will earn at least 80% on the exam questions in ED3210 that address each of the stated skill areas.

Measure 4.2: All candidates will demonstrate a proficiency of “satisfactory” or higher on the sections of the capstone project that relate to each of the stated skill areas. Projects will be scored by a faculty panel using a rubric to address key elements of each skill area.
