Legal Studies

UCF Legal Studies graduates will be able to do the following:

Discipline Specific Knowledge, Skills, Behavior and Values Outcomes

1. Recognize and apply concepts in legal studies, specifically in the core substantive areas including:

  • tort law
  • contract law
  • evidence law
  • real estate law

Measure 1.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the test questions that deal with each of these areas in the final examination in LEG4102.
Measure 1.2: All legal studies students will pass the course subsections: tort law, contract law, evidence law, and real estate law, of the Legal Certification Licensure Exam. 60% will pass the exam at first sitting, 90% of repeat takers will pass the course subsections at second sitting, and 100% of repeat takers will pass at third sitting.

2. Recall, identify, and describe the major theoretical principles relating to the American legal system.

Measure 2.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the two essays assigned on the major theoretical principles. A scoring rubric will be used to score each essay.
Measure 2.2: All students will recall, identify, and describe the major theoretical principles relating to the American legal system with at least a 70% proficiency level within the oral presentation required in LEG3201.

3. Describe discipline-related career paths for which recipients of the BS in Legal Studies are qualified.

Measure 3.1: All students will score 80% or higher when asked to select the discipline-related careers from a group of 60 careers presented as an exercise in LEG2119.
Measure 3.2: At least 85% of the respondents to the graduating senior survey will agree that they can identify 10 or more discipline-related career paths.

4. Identify and define legal research methods and sources of information.

Measure 4.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the research project that requires the use of legal research methods and sources of information. This includes citing appropriate sources and identifying key methods. Proficiency will be rated on a scoring rubric.
Measure 4.2: All students will apply legal research methods and sources of information to complete the Senior Paper required in LEG4490. Citations in the paper and the reference list will be rated “satisfactory” or higher by faculty evaluators.

Critical Thinking Outcomes

5. Analyze and solve legal studies problems, specifically:

  • analyze and categorize key facts, factual omissions, and inconsistencies in a legal situation
  • identify and evaluate alternative solutions
  • construct logical arguments to support a specific position

Measure 5.1: All students will score 70% or higher on their responses to a hypothetical legal situation that requires them to integrate the three identified critical thinking skills. A scoring rubric will be used to rate each of the targeted areas.
Measure 5.2: Within the Capstone Course project, each student will demonstrate the three targeted areas with at least 80% proficiency. The appropriate skills and their proficiency will be measured using a scoring rubric.

6. Identify interrelationships among cases, statutes, regulations, and other legal authorities:

  • determine which areas of law are relevant to a particular situation
  • identify appropriate exceptions to general legal rules
  • identify, locate, and appropriately use and evaluate both electronic and print resources to solve legal studies problems
  • prepare and execute a legal research plan
  • identify and prepare the necessary pleadings to pursue a civil case from inception to trial

Measure 6.1: All students will score 70% or higher on their responses to the questions on the final exam in LEG4011 that target relevant areas of law related to specific situations; exceptions to general legal rules.
Measure 6.2: Within the Capstone Course project, which is to identify and prepare the necessary pleadings to pursue a civil case from inception, each student will demonstrate the ability to identify, locate, and use appropriate electronic and print resources with 80% proficiency. This level of proficiency (80%) will be demonstrated in the resulting research plan. The appropriate skills and their proficiency will be measured using a scoring rubric. All students will receive a passing grade on the capstone project.

Communication Outcomes

7. Convey legal theory in a clear and concise manner.

Measure 7.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the clarity of expressing legal theory in the two essays assigned on the major theoretical principles. A scoring rubric will be used to score communication for each essay.
Measure 7.2: All students will achieve at least a 70% proficiency level on the skills associated with oral presentations within the oral presentation required in LEG 3201. A scoring rubric will be used to rate the key oral communication elements.

8. Draft various communication formats (e.g., legal documents, client correspondence, standardized forms, databanks) in keeping with professional standards including writing conventions.

Measure 8.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the two essays assigned on the major theoretical principles. A scoring rubric will be used to score each essay.
Measure 8.2: All students will earn at least “satisfactory” on their internship communication skills. Within the Legal Studies program, students are required to take 9 semester hours of internship hours and develop a career plan and find a field placement based on their career plan. Employers complete a checklist of written communication skills observed for each intern.

9. Make oral presentations of research findings.

Measure 9.1: All students will achieve at least a 70% proficiency level on the skills associated with oral presentations within the oral presentation required in LEG3201. A scoring rubric will be used to rate the key oral communication elements.
Measure 9.2: All students will achieve at least a 70% proficiency level on the oral presentation of the Capstone course Project. A scoring rubric will be used to identify and rate oral presentation skills.

10. Communicate solutions to legal dilemmas in a clear and concise manner.

Measure 10.1: All students will score 70% or higher on the clarity and conciseness of the essay in which they describe a solution to a legal dilemma. A scoring rubric will be used to score each essay.
Measure 10.2: All students will achieve at least a 70% proficiency level on the clarity and concise presentation of the work in the legal dilemma project required in LEG3201. A scoring rubric will be used to rate the proficiency of communication in the project.

Nursing

UCF graduates in Nursing will be able to:

Discipline Specific Knowledge, Skills, Behavior and Values Outcomes

1. Describe the concepts that provide the foundation of the nursing curriculum, including those in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, and growth and development.

Measure 1.1: All nursing students will pass each of the sets of questions related to targeted areas on the Nursing Foundations Proficiency Exam with at least 70%. All students must demonstrate proficiency in concepts including anatomy and physiology, nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, and growth and development. (This test can be taken multiple times until 70% proficiency is earned in the targeted areas.)
Measure 1.2: All students will score at least 80% proficiency on each of the minute papers in NUR1880 that require them to describe the core concepts. (A random sample of half of the papers will be assessed for each.)

2. Explain the use of the nursing process in providing care to clients of all ages.

Measure 2.1: All students will achieve at least 70% proficiency on the essay question on the final exam in NUR2221 that asks them to explain the use of the nursing process in providing care to clients of all ages.
Measure 2.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the explanation of the nursing process on the Checklist of Clinical Abilities assessed by their clinical preceptor.

3. Describe and use appropriate teaching-learning theories to design, implement, and evaluate educational experiences with clients of all ages and abilities.

Measure 3.1: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the application of appropriate teaching-learning theories in the simulation in NUR3123 as assessed by a faculty panel using a scoring rubric.
Measure 3.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the appropriate use of teaching-learning experiences on the Checklist of Clinical Abilities assessed by their clinical preceptor.

4. Implement and evaluate therapeutic nursing interventions.

Measure 4.1: All students will earn at least 70% on the test requiring the appropriate implementation and evaluation of therapeutic nursing interventions. (This test is given in NUR2221 and again in NUR3123 for those who did not earn a 70% on the first test.)
Measure 4.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher as rated by a faculty member on oral questions asked as part of the final exam in NUR4010.

5. Demonstrate skilled use of nursing equipment.

Measure 5.1: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the skilled use of nursing equipment in the simulation in NUR3123 as assessed by a faculty panel using a scoring rubric.
Measure 5.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the skilled use of nursing equipment on the Checklist of Clinical Abilities assessed by their clinical preceptor.

Critical Thinking Outcomes

6. Conduct accurate health assessments to determine appropriate care of individuals, families and communities.

Measure 6.1: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the health assessments in three situations given as assignments in NUR3123 as assessed using a scoring rubric.
Measure 6.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the accuracy of health assessments on the Checklist of Clinical Abilities assessed by their clinical preceptor.

7. Practice active inquiry and problem solving strategies in addressing health care concerns.

Measure 7.1: All students will pass each of the sets of questions related to targeted areas on the Nursing Strategies Exam with at least a 70%. All students must demonstrate proficiency in problem solving strategies. (This test may be taken more than once.)
Measure 7.2: All students will demonstrate at least 80% proficiency in responses to hypothetical clinical situations that require active inquiry and problem solving strategies. These will be part of the assessment in NUR2210 and NUR3123.

8. Evaluate and use appropriate research findings in nursing practice.

Measure 8.1: All students will integrate current research findings with at least a 65% proficiency into the description of possible responses to patient assessment written as an assignment in NUR4410.
Measure 8.2: All students will integrate at least 5 citations from contemporary research into the nursing practice project in NUR4410 and be rated at least “Acceptable” on the scoring rubric addressing the accurate and appropriate use of research findings.

Communication Outcomes

9. Use information technologies effectively.

Measure 9.1: All students will achieve at least 70% proficiency on the information technologies questions embedded in tests in NUR2210 and NUR3123.
Measure 9.2: All students will achieve at least 70% proficiency on the use of the internet for references in their paper project in NUR3123. A scoring rubric will be used to evaluate the appropriate use of the internet for source information.

10. Make effective oral presentations of research findings.

Measure 10.1: All students will achieve at least 70% proficiency on the oral presentation of the research findings regarding patient assessment in NUR4410.
Measure 10.1: All students will achieve at least 70% proficiency on the information technologies questions embedded in tests in NUR2210 and NUR3123.

11. Demonstrate proficiency in nursing terminology and abbreviations.

Measure 11.1: All nursing students will pass each of the sets of questions related to targeted areas on the Nursing Foundations Proficiency Exam with at least 70%. All students must demonstrate proficiency in the identification and application of biological and physiological nursing terminology. (This test may be taken more than once.)
Measure 11.2: All nursing students will demonstrate at least 80% proficiency in the terms and abbreviations used in reports prepared for their clinical reports, as rated by their preceptors.

12. Write accurate reports for varied purposes: records, summaries, etc.

Measure 12.1: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the written summaries of health assessments in three situations given as assignments in NUR3123 as assessed using a scoring rubric.
Measure 12.2: All students will achieve a rating of “satisfactory” or higher on the accuracy of the records and reports completed during their clinical experience on the Checklist of Clinical Abilities assessed by their clinical preceptor.
