Mining Big Data: Survey Factors as Arsenal to Solve the Retention Puzzle

Tinto’s seminal model spawned decades of empirical research and influenced higher education practitioners who embraced their role as intentional actors in the student departure process. This work focuses on the use of a comprehensive longitudinal data base, designed and maintained by Operational Excellence and Assessment Support, to mine for actionable findings to proactively support strategies to increase retention rates. Results are shown for Entering Student Survey variables correlated with FTIC first-year retention rates and a specific GPA score range described as the “murky middle.” The murky middle was operationalized as a first term (fall) institution cumulative GPA range of 2.0-2.59. The analysis suggests first-fall cumulative GPA is a promising factor to predict graduation and is by definition available sooner than first-year retention. This direction of study was undertaken to explore the notion that survey data collected at orientation could serve as flags by the university to target students at-risk for attrition for additional support. The findings support the idea that to improve graduation rates, it is important to find early markers that help identify students who are at-risk for attrition. Early identification using survey item markers helps the institution to proactively engage with at-risk students to mitigate attrition. Using analytical findings and a case study an argument is made that early markers drawn from responses from the Entering Student Survey can serve as arsenal to help solve the retention puzzle.
