In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on the identification and assessment of core student learning outcomes in higher education. The Florida Board of Governors (BOG) has articulated the importance of student learning and achievement in its strategic planning and accountability processes. Simultaneously, the Board has placed more emphasis on institutional accountability while permitting campus-level decisions about implementation details. The Board of Governors has mandated that all baccalaureate programs in the State of Florida public universities develop Academic Learning Compacts (ALCs) that are student learning outcomes in three areas:

  • Discipline-specific knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking

The expectation is that each program will assess those student learning outcomes.

At UCF, the BOG mandate is met by incorporating the Academic Learning Compacts (ALCs) into the existing annual Institutional Effectiveness Assessment process. UCF’s assessment efforts measure and document student learning outcomes, a process that ensures continuous program improvement. Since December 2005, all baccalaureate programs have Academic Learning Compacts available to students and prospective students.
